If you don’t use them all at once, you might find yourself with a fridge full of slimy green onions. Fear not! There are three simple methods for drying green onions that will help you preserve them for later use. In this blog post, we will discuss each method in detail so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

What is a Green Onion

Are you unsure what green onions are? Don’t worry; I was the same way until I began producing and utilizing them on a daily basis. The leaves of onion plants are used to make green onions. The bunches of green stems with small white bulbs are probably something you’ve seen at the supermarket. Another term for green onions is scallions depending on which part of the world you reside. So, in future don’t be confused with the term scallion.

How to dehydrate Green Onions in your Oven

An oven is one method for dehydrating onions at home. Here’s how to dehydrate onions in the oven, step by step:

Preheat the oven to 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius).
On a cookie sheet, arrange the thinly sliced onions in a single layer and place an oven thermometer in the centre.

Place it into the oven with the door slightly ajar to enable air to circulate.

Every 30 minutes, check the temperature to make sure the onions are uniformly heated.

The onions will shrink after around 6-12 hours of waiting and will be ready for storing.

Because ovens are common in most kitchens, using one to dry onions is one of the simplest methods, and the preparation requires no specific skills. The only downside of this method is that it leaves the oven door slightly open, which might be harmful for children or dogs playing in the kitchen, so be careful.
The onions will shrink after around 6-12 hours of waiting and will be ready for storing.

Three Simple Methods for Drying Green Onions

Drying Green Onions in a Dehydrator

First step is to wash the green onions and remove any wilted bits and cut the ends with the root. Try and keep the pieces uniform as it helps with the drying process.

I use different trays for the white and green parts. This is done as the white parts contain more moisture and therefore a little longer to dry. By keeping then separate you can remove the green ones a little bit earlier.

Place the trays in the dehydrator, at 100 degrees it takes roughly 6-7 hours. By drying them slowly it will better preserve the taste and color.

Once done place them in an air tight container, I prefer glass such as a canning jar.

Drying Scallions or Green Onions in the Sun

Spring onions should be rinsed in cold water.

Cut the lengths evenly, roughly 1 cm width

Give them a good wash under some cool water.

Using a new clean napkin or paper towel, dab them gently so as to remove as much moisture as possible.

Allow to dry in a “still region” away from high winds, otherwise your onions will blow away.

You may check on them a few hours later and reposition them to speed up the drying process and reduce adhering to the paper.

Shake/pull the onions from the paper after 24 hours.

Place them in an air tight container and they should last up to 18 months.

How to Rehydrate Green Onions

Bring water to a boil and pour into a bowl.

To the boiling water, add the dehydrated green onions.

Wait around five minutes.

Scoop out your onions, dry them, and put them to good use! Remember that you may cook with the water.

It now has a tinge of onion flavor and will enhance the flavor of a variety of foods.

Goldenrod is a herb that can grow up to 6 feet tall and has yellow flowers. It’s Latin name is Solidago Canadensis and is one of the Asteraceae family. It is native to the Americas, but it has been introduced into Europe as well. The leaves are used for teas and soups, and the roots can be dried and ground for use as a thickener in cooking. From a distance the flower of the Goldenrod look like spears, with the yellow flowers making up the spear head. They shoot our from the ground to a maximum of 6 feet. It’s leaves have small teeth looking obtrusions. Generally found at the edge of forests or at times on the side of roads.

When does Goldenrod bloom:

It generally blooms in late summer to early fall. They are beautiful in full bloom and brighten up an area were there are plenty of them. The time to plant them is late fall or spring. They are a hardy plant which some consider as a weed. Although once you know the medicinal benefits of goldenrod you may change your mind.

What to do with Goldenrod:

There are a myriad of uses for Goldenrod, in short it is a herb that remedies imbalances in our eco system. Now that’s a broad answer I know but we offer more explanation in the following paragraph.

The more popular use is it’s use to break kidney stones. It also helps with urinary tract infections and the whole tract area. In line with this area of the body is bladder infections and liver infections.

It does really well with fungal infections such as candida which right now is a huge problem in our modern world.

Here’s a list of symptoms that have been known to assist with.

  • antiseptic qualities
  • sore through
  • mouth wash to clear ulcers
  • arthritis
  • helps with inflammation
  • lowers blood pressure
  • allergies
  • cold and flus

Making a brew with goldenrod

Using goldenrod is simply a matter of drying the leaves and boiling them in a boiling pot. It’s the simplest and best way to use this herb. You can also use it as a poultice for any skin conditions. I word of caution is to only take goldenrod no more than couple of weeks at a time. Use it fix or ease a condition and then stop taking it. Permanent use may have adverse affects as it has the potential to upset the eco system.

Final Thoughts:

There have been no official studies of treating humans with goldenrod. Much of the information has been procured by first hand experiences and other herbalists. So when using goldenrod use with care and in moderation until you get a good feel for this perennial. My personal experience with is to use it as a tea, I take it when a feel a mouth ulcer is coming along and it does help. As some of you know mouth ulcers can take up to 2 weeks to heal. By taking 3 cups a day of goldenrod over a period of 3 to 4 days when the onset of the ulcer appears it will generally dissipate within a week.

In short this plant is has awesome potential for a healing herb. It offers so many potential uses that it is worth growing goldenrod yourself and using it to better understand it’s healing benefits.

The traditional way to brew tea from basil is to add the basil leaves in boiling water. Once the water is boiling turn the heat down and simmer for about 15 minutes. Use a sieve to pour the tea mixture in a cup and add you favorite sweetener. If you can drink it without sugar all the better. An alternative to sugar is to add honey but only after the tea is warm and not boiling hot. This prevents diminishing the honey’s natural benefits.

The other way is to boil water first. Place the basil in a herb ball and place in a ceramic cup. Pour the water in the ceramic cup containing the herb ball and cover with a towel. The next day place the mixture in the fridge and now you have a brew you can drink when you like. If it’s too strong you can add some water. Enjoy!!

I’ve learnt so much after researching this marvelous herb. I had no idea at the myriad of uses that basil could offer. I’ve begun drinking my own brew . Have you wondered which are the top 10 plants that can be made into flour? In this blog post we delve into some of the popular and some not so popular plants that we can use to make flour. These plants provide us with the nutrients we need to stay healthy, and give us a variety of flavors to enjoy in our foods.

Criteria:

There are hundreds if not thousands of plant varieties plants that can be made into flour. There are probably many more that you will not find mentioned on the internet. We decided to focus on a couple of different aspects. The first being the availability, how easy is it to grow or collect the desired. The other being the nutritional aspects. The list provide plants that have high nutritional value and which provide an alternative to wheat.

Benefits:

I’ll start of by saying variety is the spice of life. Most of us have grown up with the smell and taste of fresh traditional bread wafting around the house or your local bakery. Alas too much of a good thing can become boring and in some cases unhealthy with the recent rise in gluten intolerance.  It’s time to mix it up, in this post we explore some alternatives to flour. Some may surprise and others you may know.

Another good reason to know which plants that can be made into flour is when things get tough and wheat is not readily available knowing alternatives can sustain a household indefinitely.

So let’s dive in and explore the alternatives one at a time.

Almonds

Almonds are relatively easy to collect, the harvest time is late summer to early spring. The hull begins to split in summer and in a month or two the hull will split wide enough where by a good shaking of the branch will cause the nut to easily fall out. Once you collect the almonds you can decide if you want to grind the almonds blanched or unblanched. To make unblanched flour simply place the amount of almond you require and grind into flour.

Blanched almond flour will require to remove the skin. To do this boil the almond in boiling water for one minute. Remove and once cool enough squeeze the almond to remove from skin. Rinse in cool water and place in baking tray. Then place in pre heated oven at 60 degrees Celsius for 5 minutes. Remove and cool completely. Now your ready to grind the blanched almonds into flour. The texture will be smoother that the unblanched almonds. A popular use is for making walnut caramel tart but the uses are endless.

This is another seeds that is easily converted to flour by using a coffee grinder or blender. Like all flours store them in a sealed container and store in a cool, dry, dark place and it will last weeks if not months.

Chestnuts

Chestnuts may not be as popular or well known in America but they’re a unique fruit that can trace its roots back to Italy. These sweet treats come from the castanea tree and have been enjoyed by people all over Asia since time immemorial! chest nut trees produce an exquisite treat called “castanets”

Chestnuts are my favorite, there flavour is nutty, unique and I can eat tons of them. The nut doesn’t contain gluten and therefore is not sticky like wheat flour. So it can be challenging cooking your regular favorites, none the less there are countless ways to use chestnut flour.

To process chestnuts into flour is easy.

First remove the nut from the shell. Score the nut using an X shape. Use a small peeling knife and to be safe place the nut on a wooden board to do this. Peel the nut back with the knife and remove the nut.

When they are fresh it requires a lot of work to remove the skin. The easiest and best way to remove the skin is to dry them either in the oven or using a dehydrator. A couple of hours in the oven on very low heat will do the trick.

Once dry and skin removed place in a blender using 1 part water and 2 parts chestnuts. This will produce a puree so we now have to dry again to get our precious flour. Again using an oven or dehydrator will work. Spread the puree on and oven tray and on low heat. Heat until completely dry and now back into the grinder or blender it goes to get it into a fine dust.

As you can see turning chestnuts into flour requires some effort but like most alternatives it is well worth it.

Final Thoughts

In this article we will delve into the difference between freeze dryer vs dehydrator. We will look at the obvious advantages and disadvantages of each drying method. Although the best product does not necessarily mean it’s the right one for your particular situation. For example we know that a swiss army knife is better than a pocket knife you buy from the thrift shop. But if your only going to cut twine a couple of times a week then it may be advantages to buy the thrift shop knife. I hope that explains the theory behind what I’m trying to convey.

Preserving foods has been an important aspect of human evolution. The necessity to preserve food was borne out a need to survive when food was scarce. Some early methods of preserving foods was curing or drying using dehydration methods as far back as 12,000 BC. Smoking and salting were popular methods to preserve food by drying or extracting the moisture from the foods thereby inhibiting the growth of bacteria. Other more popular methods to preserve foods was pickling, canning, freezing and even burying to name a few. Nowadays the common methods to preserve food is vacuum sealing, freeze drying, pasteurization and dehydrating. All have their pros and cons. Today we take a close look at freeze drying vs dehydrating.

Freeze Dryer in action and how it works

In a few words a freeze dryer removes water from a perishable material to preserve it.

Let’s take a look at the 3 step process that’s used to freeze dry material.

  1. Freezing.

The freezing is usually done in a freezer and essentially cools the material below its triple point to ensure that sublimation occurs. This preserves the materials physical form.

2. Sublimation.

This is the primary drying process by which the pressure is lowered and heat added for the water to sublimate. This phase of the drying removes about 95% of the water.

3. Adsorption

The final and secondary phase of the phase removes the ionically bound water molecules from the material. Most materials can be dried 1-5% of it’s moisture.

This briefly explains the three step process that goes into freeze drying food, without all the technical terms.

Dehydrator in action and how it works.

We have all probably at some time eaten something that was dehydrated. Foods such as chips, fruit, jerky and much more.

A dehydrator uses a very simple method of using dry air to dehydrate food. A device that carries trays whereby you place food stuffs on. Once closed, the aim is to removes moisture by circulating hot air. Specific foods will require different settings, such things as temperature and length of time to be dehydrated. Directions are most likely provided with the purchase of the dehydrator and there would be countless ways to find this info by doing a simple google search.

Dehydrator vs freezer dryer – Which foods last longer?

Generally speaking freeze dried food can last as much as 20 years. Once the food is freeze dried then they must be placed in an airtight container as soon as possible to enable this long storage life. If not properly sealed the shelf life is vastly diminished, in some cases only a few months.

Dehydrating beans is a great way to save money and a have nutritious food on hand. Beans are rich in protein, fiber, and iron, making them an ideal staple for anyone who wants to improve their health or lose weight. This article provides a quick guide with instructions on how to dehydrate beans. Green and yellow beans are ideal for this method.

Some nutritional facts about fresh green beans you may be interested are as follows: 1 cup of green beans contain 3.6 grams of sugar, virtually no fat and no cholesterol. They also contain very low sodium, in fact one cup has only 6.6 milligrams(mg). One more thing to mention they are high in vitamins A, C, K and folic acid as stated by healthline. They really pack a punch so why not learn to dehydrate and store your own beans.

Why store dehydrated beans?

Dehydrating and storing beans is a great way for preppers to prepare these types of foods as they can keep up to one year in storage. They are one of my favorite super foods due to their nutritional value. The other reason why you should learn to dehydrate your own beans is there are endless ways to cook them. From soups to casseroles and everything in between.

Steps to dehydrate beans.

Wash your beans thoroughly ,they may look clean but looks can be deceiving.

Cut them into small pieces, around 1 to 2 inches long.

Cut fresh beans

Now it’s time to blanch them. This requires you to boil the bean pieces for around 3 minutes. Simply place them into a pot of boiling water and after 3 minutes your done.

Take them out and place them in a container of iced water for a couple of minutes. This will preserve their goodness and texture.

Now take them out and put them in a strainer and give them a good shake to remove the excess water.

Now it’s time to place the cut beans on dehydrator sheets. If you don’t them oven trays will do just fine.

Place the tray in the oven that’s set to 50 degrees C or 120 degrees F. The drying process can take anywhere between 8 to 12 hours depending on your oven. I would begin checking them every hour after 6 hours. Make sure they are completely dry and brittle.

Once beans are ready remove from oven and let them sit for another 6 hours to remove any excess moisture.

Then it’s time to place them in airtight containers, I prefer jars. You could easily store them from 1 to 2 years.

How to use dehydrated beans

You can use dehydrated beans in soups, chili, or any recipe that calls for uncooked dried beans without having to rehydrate them.

To rehydrate them you just need to soak them in boiling water for around 10 minutes and your ready to go.

Final thoughts

Dehydrating beans is an easy, frugal way to save money and add variety to your cooking. It’s a another food that can be stored and brought out when food is scarce and you need a healthy food to get your family through the next winter. I really enjoy writing posts about preserving foods and preparing them for long term use. As you know I’m a prepper at heart and I love being self sufficient. In this article we will look at the best bees for honey. There are many varieties of bees although we will just hone in on the best bees to build your very own bee farm. Either in your backyard, homestead or farm. This has become popular with many people preferring the rural life and thus it leads them to this sticky food source.  

As you discover there is no perfect honey bee, each comes with it’s own drawbacks and advantages. There are various factors to consider when embarking on this journey. Some critical factors to consider is the amount of honey production, the aggressiveness of the bees and their hardiness.

Before we move on I would add that beekeeping has some drawbacks. Read them before considering this endeavor. Beekeeping takes work, it requires a fair amount of effort to upkeep and maintain the beehive. It also has a high initial upfront cost that may deter some people. Apis Mellifera Ligustica is a type of Apis mellifera and residents love them for their gentle nature. Provide a high honey production, and beautiful aesthetic. They are preferred honey bees for beginners. They have a bright gold body covered in deep black stripes that make this species one of the most popular breeds in North America.

The downside to these bees are they tend to stray from beehives which can leave beekeepers worried about not finding them again once they wander off so it’s important for beekeepers take care when tending to their hives- especially during pollination season!

3. The Gray/Carniolan Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera Carnica)

The Apis Mellifera Carnica is a great option for beginner beekeepers who prefer to work with less aggressive bees because they have mild-natured personalities. These honeybees are very easy to work with and you can get away with rarely using the smoker  . On top of that, these gentle creatures can survive cold winter months and still maintain colony size throughout the colder season – some colonies may even produce jars worth of honey during this time period. The only potential downside here is that an increase in hive population as spring approaches leaves one vulnerable to swarming events…

4. Himalayan Honey Bee (Apis Cerana)

The Apis Cerana honey bee is native to Asia, and can be found in countries like Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia as well. What makes them unique are their resilience against weather changes and various diseases; since they’re relatively small many companies have imported European honey bees into Asian countries for increased production of high-quality products such as honey. Apis Mellifera Iberiensis are a rare and ancient breed of honeybees. They have managed to keep their bloodline pure for millions of years now through selective mating, refusing any queen that isn’t genetically related to them. However, Apis Mellifera Iberienesis bees attack intruders with vigor! When they feel an intruder in the territory has encroached too far or is threatening someone nearby. They send out guards who will patrol around the area and sting anything deemed as dangerous until it leaves or dies: humans included. If you plan on catching these elusive creatures in nature be prepared by wearing appropriate protection.

6. Caucasian Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera Caucasica)

They are considered to be the gentlest race and thus are popular with new beekeepers. They are not as productive as the Italians but do better in colder weather .also prone to infections, and it requires a beekeeper with experience in handling them for this type to be considered suitable as an addition to your apiary.

This species only produces gray hairs all over their body that give off a sticky substance from too much propolis production when they create hives which makes them difficult for beginners who may not know how best take care these creatures properly.
