Introduction

This article will show you how to use a whetstone step by step. It will some practice but anyone can learn.
Keeping your knives sharp is essential for any camper, hunter, chef or home cook. One of the best ways to maintain knife sharpness is by using a whetstone. A whetstone can be used to sharpen almost any blade, including pocket knives and scissors. Here’s a guide on how to use a whetstone correctly and safely.

Choose the Correct Grit for Your Needs

Whetstones come in different grits, which refers to the coarseness of the stone’s surface. They range from extra-coarse stones that are used for repairs to very fine stones that are used for polishing. The majority of knives should be sharpened with medium or fine grits, typically ranging from 400–1000 grit, depending on how dull the blade is. If your knife is extremely dull you can start with an extra-coarse stone then move onto a finer one after.

What is Grit?

A grainy stone used to sharpen knives is called a whetstone. There are various kinds of whetstone grits, and each one has a unique function. The individual grains or flakes that make up a whetstone’s grit vary in size. A finer stone is indicated by a higher grit number, whilst a coarser stone is indicated by a lower one.

For the greatest results, selecting the right whetstone grit is crucial. In general, you should finish your blade with a finer grit whetstone and sharpen it with a coarser grit whetstone.

Grit 200/400

The big grains enable you to pre-sharpen your blade and restore an edge on rough scratches. A blade with a little edge chip or other minor damage can be fixed. The amount of material removed by this type of stone will make up for it. It is necessary to keep honing with a finer stone, like grain 1000. The cutting edge will remain quite “rough” whether you stop on a 200 or 400 stone.

Grit 600-800

Roughly in the middle between 200–400 and 1000. Numerous flaws can be fixed using the 600 stone without removing a lot of material.

Grit 1000

The best stone available. Sharpening is completed and a very nice edge is obtained with just the right amount of abrasiveness to restore blunt blades. For low-end steels, do not exceed 1000; it is worthless.

Grit 2000-4000

For the majority of steels, both European and Japanese, finishing stone is quite useful. It enables you to have an even finer and softer cut as well as to polish the cutting edge well.

Grit 5000+

They are saved for steels that will benefit from them. As a result, really hard steels will have an edge that is razor sharp and will last for a while. It is futile to use such a stone on 58 HRC steel since the steel is too soft to maintain such a thin edge. After just a few cuts, the edge will revert to normal.

We recommend the Kit-Grit 1000/6000

Soak Your Stone

Before you begin, soak your whetstone in water for at least 20 minutes. This will prevent cracking when you use it. Make sure you place something underneath it so that it doesn’t crack because of pressure applied to its edges when submerged in water. After soaking, remove any excess water with a towel before beginning the process of sharpening your knife.

Angle Matters!

When sharpening your knife with a whetstone, make sure you keep the angle correct and consistent throughout the entire process. This will ensure that your blade gets evenly sharpened across its length and width. The typical angle for most kitchen knives is between 10–20 degrees. But this can vary depending on the type of blade you have and its size as well as how dull it has become over time. Keep in mind that if you choose too shallow an angle. It will take more time to sharpen your knife and if you choose too steep an angle, there’s a risk of damaging your blade beyond repair!

Sharpening Technique

Once you have selected the correct angle for sharpening your blade. Hold both sides of your whetstone firmly against either side of your blade and move them back and forth> Move in equal strokes until they meet at their center point (this should take about 8–10 strokes). Make sure that each stroke covers about ¼ inch (6mm) on each side of the blade. This will ensure that both sides get equally honed as well as prevent overheating due to excessive friction. This could damage or warp your blade permanently! After every few strokes check if there are burrs along either side. These indicate sharpness has been achieved and it’s time to switch sides! Continue stroking until burrs form along both sides then switch angles if needed. Finish off with some light stroking along all edges followed by polishing off any remaining burrs with some extra fine cloth or paper towel!

Final Thoughts

With some practical experience and practise you should now know to how to sue a whetstone.
Sharpening blades using a whetstone requires patience and practice. Mastering this skill will guarantee perfectly honed blades every single time! Don’t forget: select the right grit before starting out. Keep an even angle throughout; stroke evenly across both sides; check for burrs frequently. Switch angles/grits when needed; polish off any remaining burrs afterwards! With these tips in hand, anyone can become an expert at honing their blades like a pro – happy sharpening!

Introduction:

Learning how to make ginger powder is a breeze. Ginger is a great way to add some flavor and spice to your dishes. Brewing a ginger tea is also high on the agenda for some. The smell of a ginger brew is heaven to some people. Not only that, but it has many health benefits as well! If you’re looking for a way to make your own ginger powder, look no further. This step-by-step guide will show you how to make your own ginger powder at home.

Why use ginger powder?

Ginger has long been a popular ingredient in cooking and is known to be a powerhouse of flavor and nutrition. From subtly warming an omelet to adding excitement to your favorite stir-fry, ginger powder provides an easy way to add delicious flavor and nourishment to meals. What’s more, using ginger powder instead of fresh ginger root also comes with some unexpected health benefits! In this blog post we’ll explore the many reasons why you should use ginger powder as part of your healthy eating plan.

Fresh Ginger

Making Your Own Ginger Powder – Step by Step Guide

Step 1: Preparing the Ginger

The first step in making ginger powder is preparing the fresh ginger root. To do this, you need to peel off the skin of the ginger with a vegetable peeler or knife. Once the skin is removed from the ginger, slice it into thin slivers and spread them out on a baking sheet. Make sure that they are not touching each other so that they can dry evenly.

Please note that you some cultures keep the skin and this is perfectly ok. Remember to clean the skin thoroughly before grinding.

Step 2: Drying the Ginger Slivers

Once you have sliced up your ginger root and spread it out on a baking sheet, place it in an oven set to 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius). Leave the oven open while drying, so that moisture can escape as it dries. After about an hour of drying time, take the baking sheet out of the oven and let cool completely before proceeding to step 3.

Step 3: Grinding Up The Ginger Slivers Into A Powder

Now that your ginger slivers are completely dried out, it’s time to grind them up into a powder form. You can use either an electric grinder or simply use a mortar and pestle if you don’t have one available. Once all of your slivers have been ground up into a fine powder, transfer them into an airtight container for storage until ready for use.
Conclusion: Making your own ginger powder at home can be done easily with just three steps! All you need is some fresh ginger root and an oven or grinder for creating your very own spice blend in no time at all. With this guide as reference, you can easily create delicious dishes with this flavorful addition! Give it a try today!

Storing ginger powder.

Once you have your powdered ginger you simply store in an air tight container and can keep for months. Just ensure the ginger is completely dry before storing as this will keep it as fresh as possible for longer.

Final thoughts

Grinding and storing ginger is an awesome prepping technique. As you know here at epicprepper it’s all about having these ingredients when they are not in season. So if you love your ginger and eat if often this is a great way to have it on hand when these plants are not in season.

Introduction

A bug out bag is a must for anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency situation. But what should you put in your bug out bag? That can be a difficult question to answer, especially if you are not sure what type of emergency you might face. In this blog post, we will discuss the contents of a basic bug out survival bag. This will help give you an idea of what items you need to include in your own bag.

1. Food

The best emergency food on the market today is the ReadyWise Emergency Food Supply. All you do is add water and ready to eat. In the 6kg pack there are 124 servings. So, although bulky it is all you require to keep you going for several weeks in need be.

2. Water

Clean water is essential for survival and therefore one of the most important items to consider. Along with bringing enough water for several days the best water filtration systems is the ‘Membrane Straw Water Filter‘. You should definitely keep one of these for each member of the family.

Some water purification tables such as Coghlan’s Drinking Tablets are a good idea to have on hand.

3. Shelter

Lightweight tent, the ones that compact to a very small size are also more expensive but may be worth investing in a good one.

4. Clothing

Underclothes not outer clothing is what I mean here. They don’t take as much space and keeping clean is essential is staying disease free.

5. First aid kit

This goes without saying, invest in a good first aid kit.

6. Fire starter

Along with your fire starter keep a box of matches

7. Knife

There are a multitude of uses for a knife in a survival situation. It can be used for hunting, self-defense, or to cut through debris. A good knife should be durable and easy to use.

8. Multi-tool

A multi-tool is a handy tool to have in any situation. It includes a variety of tools that can be used for various purposes,

9. Flashlight

Have one of those high lumens flashlights that are relatively small.

10. Compass

Having a compass is fine but make sure you know how to use it along with your maps.

11. Extra batteries

I know these items are heavy but if you carry battery powered gadgets than having no battery makes them useless.

12. Maps

A map(s) of the surrounding environment you will be in and together with a compass.

13. Radio

Having a portable radio is essential to keep abreast of any news that relates to your situation. My post on 6 crankshaft flashlights is a good read as some of them contain a radio. Being crankshaft they don’t rely on batteries

14. Signaling device

A device such as a whistle, flashlight, signal mirror is what’s required here. Keep all 3 items in your bug out bag as they a many more uses than signaling.

15. Money

This may become obsolete but it never hurts to be prepared.

16 Small fishing Kit

This should be small an lightweight, it should contain the bare essentials for the ability to catch your food. Items such as fishing line, hooks, small sinkers should be all the items you need.

17 Waterproof ziplog bags

Good for storing items that need to stay waterproof and other such items

18 Small axe or hatchet

Cutting wood and thick rope could be a necessity where you will be.

19 Sharpening stone

A necessity for keeping your knife and axe sharp

20 Rain poncho

You can get those ponchos that wrap up to the size of you fist.

21 Bug out Bag

My favorite for the lowest price is the Tru Salute Military Tactical Backpack. This bag holds a tone of stuff and is durable enough to withstand almost anything. And the reason why I love it the best is it’s relative cheap, seriously you can’t go wrong with this bag.

Tru Salute Tactical Backpack

This is probably the most important item and that’s knowledge. It doesn’t take any space in your bug out bag but can be the difference. Attaining knowledge about the environment you will be bugging out at. Knowing which wild foods are edible and if and where there is flowing water. Knowledge to hunt and how to prepare and cook it. Having knowledge of natural medicines and herbs are also very important. There are some great books around that you can start reading and learning some basic survival skills today. You just never know when you might need the knowledge to help save you or your family.

Final Thoughts:

Bug out bags can be an important part of your survival plan. What you put in your bug out bag will depend on a variety of factors, including where you live and the types of emergencies you are most likely to face. The items we’ve listed should give you a good starting point for putting together your own bug out bag. Remember, this is just a guide – customize your bag to fit your specific needs. Now that you know what to include in your bug out bag, it’s time to start packing!

Introduction:

You’re reading this blog post because you have a cockroach infestation problem, and are looking for an easy cockroach trap. We know that the idea of killing or trapping these pests is not pleasant – but it’s also not as difficult as you may think! This article will provide instructions on how to build your own homemade trap so you can be free from cockroaches once and for all. We will focus on one main method that I have used successfully and continue to do so. Although I will also share another natural way that I have used to great success as well.

Why cockroaches are bad:

Not only do cockroaches look ugly they are virulent spreaders of disease. Having cockroaches in the house, especially the kitchen or where food is stored can be an issue. Keeping areas free of food scraps and crumbs is the primary action to avoid attracting cockroaches in the first place. If cockroaches still appear then it’s time to take the gloves off. In the following section we focus on 2 methods that I’ve personally used and both are extremely effective.

There are approximately 4,500 species of cockroaches world wide but the main one we deal with is the German Cockroach pictured below. Either method will work on most if not all cockroaches.

American cockroach

Method 1:

For our first easy cockroach trap obtain a small jar and clean it thoroughly. To the jar add used coffee grains. If you have a coffee machine this shouldn’t be a problem. Add some of the used coffee beans in the jar and place it near the area where you last saw cockroach activity. Rub some olive oil around the inner lip of the jar. This will prevent the cockroaches from climbing out.

Method 2:

With this method you will need some borax, found in most laundries. Mix equal parts borax and sugar and place on some paper. Place the paper near where you last saw cockroaches and leave overnight. The mixture dehydrates the roaches and kills them quickly. The problem with this method is that you may find dead roaches around the house. Which is why I prefer the first method.

You may need to use the methods several times to get all the cockroaches.

Final thoughts:

Using both or each of these methods will eventually solve you cockroach problem without using harsh chemicals that could be harmful to pets or us. Not only are these methods natural and non toxic they are relatively free.

I would love to hear your cockroach trapping experiences. If you have another natural method(s), I would love to hear them. Comment below to help our community.

What is a fishing survival kit?

A fishing survival kit should be small and compact enough to easily fit in a backpack, glove box, bug out bag or a survival bag. Although large enough to store enough fishing essential gear that will allow you to catch fish during emergency situations.

Today we will look at how you can setup your own fishing survival kit very cheaply and easily. The fishing components are few and easily obtained from your local tackle shop or bought online. If your a beginner to intermediate I will show you two easy fishing knots that you will learn in minutes. We will also discuss some tips and tricks to improve your chances to catching a feed.

Our diy mini survival kit will contain generic items to be used in many, if not all situations. As long as you have access to water, be it a river, creek, dam, estuary, pier, rocks, sea or anything in between you will have enough items in your fishing survival kit to attempt to catch a feed. This article will not specialize in any particular type of fishing but an all rounder with basic items to arm you with enough gear and knowledge to be successful.

Putting together the mini fishing survival kit

To begin, we will need a small tackle box or any small plastic container preferably more flat than squarish, this will make it easier to store. Down below I will provide a photo of one of several mini fishing kit which I keep in the in my bug out bag. If your concerned about water or moisture getting into the container you can buy a waterproof metal tin.

Fishing line

The most important item you require will be a good quality line. What I prefer to use is one that is not too thick as we wont be catching marlin. Our target fish will be small to medium native fish so we need a line that is flexible yet sturdy and rugged enough to withstand snags, rocks submerged branches and the like. In short a 10lb good quality line is ideal for our mini kit.

Our other consideration is to find or make something to carry and store the line in our container. Such as the below which took me minutes to make. Just wind the line via the notches, easy as pie.

Easy to make

Hooks

The next most important item you will need are hooks. So having a good amount and variety is paramount to success. I prefer the long shanked hooks as they can prevent getting cut lines. Purchasing stainless steel hooks are ideal, they resist salt water fairly well and last a long time.

Float

The next item we need is a float. this comes in handy when fishing in areas where there are many snags in the water. This is common with many rivers and lakes so having a float can be beneficial. One advantage in using floats is you can use the drift of the water to fish a larger area. We are limited for space so having a small float is a better option in this case.

Sinkers

Sinkers is another important item but not essential, we mainly require sinkers to keep the bait down and we only require a small one to do this job effectively.

Lures

Having a good selection of lures is also a good idea, we obviously have the constraint of space so we should choose something smallish but effective.

The celta lure is my favorite for freshwater fishing. I’ve had many successes with them over the years.

Swivels

Swivels are not paramount to store in our fishing survival kit as we want to keep the items at a minimum. The good news is they are generally very small so having a couple is not a show stopper. Keeping a half a dozen size 10 swivels would not take up much space so having a few on hand can be helpful but not essential if you have space constraints.

Fishing scissors

This is another handy item that I always carry. It doesn’t take a lot of space and can save you from chipped teeth, which is how I once cut fishing line.

Two fishing knots is all you need

locked clinch knot

Locked Clinch Knot

If you would like a knot to tie hooks, floats, swivels, sinkers and just about anything really then you will love this knot. You can learn this in minutes and with a some practice will stay with you forever.

The image on the left clearly shows how this knot is made. As you can see it’s basically a 3 step process. Get yourself a hook and some line and practice this until you get it down pat.

The second knot is a little more complicated but not earth shattering. This knot is called a dropper loop and can be used to add extra hooks or lures to your rig. Being a strong and sturdy knot it’s rarely let me down. These two knots will get you through most if not all fishing situations.

Bait

Fresh bait is the best but that’s not say you wont have equal success with lures. As mentioned I’ve had many successes with celta lures and it’s my first option when fishing freshwater. If on occasion you find you have lost your lures then the best freshwater bait is worms, bugs, grasshoppers. They are plentiful and fairly easy to collect by scrounging around your immediate environment. If near saltwater finding a nearby rock pool will present you with crabs, worms, mussels, barnacles and small fish. I may create another post about how to collect fresh bait in fresh and salt water environments.

Final thoughts

I hope you’ve taken some great insights and learnings into putting together your own emergency fishing kit. If your not an avid angler this post should have given you enough knowledge from tying knots to gathering bait to get you started. It obviously isn’t a comprehensive fishing guide, there’s better websites that can teach you those skills. I would encourage you to put kit items together yourself but if you would like to buy a ready made survival fishing kit I have a recommendation for you down below which I purchased for someone a while back.

If you fell compelled or don’t have the inclination to make your own fishing kit this is my best Amazon fishing survival kit. For around $16 (at time of writing) you will get all the basic gear you need. The tin box is water and moisture resistant and enough gear to catch fish. They do have a standard version but I don’t it’s necessary for a fishing survival kit.

If your not an avid angler and you need to buy the items listed above separately it could get pricey. if your strapped for time it may be a better option to buy a ready made kit.
